After the waining of Greece’s Golden Age, where all the immortal plays and art we know today have come to pass, the Hellenistic Age brought upon a new genre of Greek theatre, called the New Comedy. In short— they were simplistic, conventionalized, re-used plots with stock characters, typically centered around thwarted lovers that live happily in the end.
If we look at the social lifestyle of the Hellenistic Age, the Greeks were under great stress and paranoia over economic woes. It’s been noted through history that artistic values mirror the quality of living. In times of stress or difficulty, art more and more becomes simply outlets of distraction, where intellectual or thought-provoking tales are cast aside for quick, cheap laughs.
So the next time you notice what crappy movies Hollywood is dishing out, you might want to check the value of the dollars you wasted on seeing it.

‘What then is Love?’ I [Socrates] asked; ‘Is he mortal?’ ‘No.’‘What then?.. ‘What is he, Diotima?’‘He is a great spirit, and like all spirits he is intermediate between the divine and the mortal.’ ‘And what,’ I said, ‘is his power?’ ‘He interprets,’ she replied, ‘between gods and men, conveying and taking across to the gods the prayers and sacrifices of men, and to men the commands and replies of the gods; he is the mediator who spans the chasm which divides them, and therefore in him all is bound together, and through him the arts of the prophet and the priest, their sacrifices and mysteries and charms, and all prophecy and incantation, find their way.’
